From Great to Advanced Leadership: The Happiest People Pursue the Most Difficult Problems

"Advanced leadership” ‎goes a step beyond great leadership, whether in professions or organizations, by tackling complex, messy systems problems and creating promising solutions to improve communities and nations. These efforts demonstrate possibilities for change as well as provide purpose and meaning in the lives of the leaders pursuing them. "Advanced Leadership" is also the name of an innovation at Harvard that educates successful leaders at the top of their fields or professions who are transitioning from their primary careers to their next years of service.  ‎Professor Kanter will offer new insights from some of the inspiring projects and creative innovations undertaken by leaders in Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative, including a fast growing digital platform to increase access to free services in health, education, arts and culture‎; a new financing model for projects to save oceans from environmental degradation;  a business solution to the global refugee crisis; and a new retail model to end food waste and improve nutrition for the poor. The challenges, lessons, and tools from these change ventures are relevant to executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals at any life stage.

Professor Kanter  is also Chair and Director of the Harvard University Advanced Leadership Initiative, an innovation that helps successful leaders at the top of their professions apply their skills to national and global challenges in their next life stage. A collaboration across all of Harvard, the Advanced Leadership Initiative aims to build a new leadership force for the world. Her latest book, MOVE: Putting America's Infrastructure Back in the Lead, a New York Times’ Book review Editor’s Choice, is a sweeping look across industries and technologies shaping the future of mobility and the leadership required for transformation.
